The project involves student detective groups investigating:
.

•
 potential environmental "victims":
.

•
"crime" sites.

Murder under the microscope runs over a three-week period each year with clues beamed via satellite to SBS TV and Internet broadcasts.

Schools must register to be part of the competition and, on acceptance, are provided with a badge ID that serves as a password to participate in the game. Teachers are provided with a handbook that outlines the rules and details of the game.
